History of Smugglers' Notch
Smugglers' Notch in Vermont boasts a rich and intriguing history, dating back to the War of 1812 and extending through the Prohibition era of the 1920s.
This remote location, with its numerous caves and dense forests, provided the perfect cover for smugglers transporting goods across the Canada–US border.
Additionally, the Notch served as a crucial escape route for fugitive slaves seeking freedom in Canada via the Underground Railroad.
Today, Smugglers' Notch State Park, established by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, preserves this fascinating history while offering a family-friendly ski destination at Smugglers' Notch Resort, which has welcomed visitors since 1956.
